This is a comment on the general website.. While I do understand the worry about “dangerous” Breeds, I think that that is a catch-all phrase to include agressive and vicious.
I have owned several dogs whos breeds are not the friendliest as a whole, however with proper training, socialization and the owner being alpha, you can have the gentlest of the “dangerous” breeds…
One of the greatest problems with some of these breeds in my honest opinion is AKC wanting to get their “mitts” on them. AKC wants every dog to be lassie… that comes down to basicly breeding fault into some dogs to get the temperament that AKC wants.
As far as banning dogs, our city attempted to do a breed ban, and I was able to help sucessfully fight it because it was ill-informed. My Dog breed was one of the ones on the list because our dogs killed some ankle-biting rat-like dog. Our dog was in our properly fenced yard (Brazilian Mastiffs) their dog roams the neighborhood unfixed and for months has been “fence-fighting” with my dogs, when my dogs are inside the house, their dog would come in thru our field fence and try to mark its scent in our yard. I let the dogs out, not realizing their dog was on my property and it didn’t make it back to the fence. Is my dog defensive of its territory, sure, is it aggressive, sure.. is it under control? Yup. Is it dangerous, not while under control, is it vicious nope, we have kids and friends over with no issue. We had one that started to become dangerous, and we had it put down because I feel that is the responsibility of the dog owner.
Now the crux of the story, the dog owner, who happened to be on the city council didn’t care that her dog was running loose (against city rules) not licenced (against city rules), on my property (against city rules), and she tried to get my dog breed banned.
It is my belief that each dog should be treated as an individual and banned based on the dogs actions NOT just because of a breed.. I don’t want to try to anthropromorphize the animals by saying it is like banning a race or religion because of stereotyping but it does come close.
I am sorry Officer Jones, you can’t live in the city because your dog, the K-9 police officer is a breed that is bad.. But this Chihuahua who has bitten a dozen people can be here because he is not on the list.
